A Captiva Home with Creative Roots
Tropical Sunrise is more than a place to stay on Captiva Island. Originally built by artist Katie Gardenia, the home has a connection to one of Captiva’s best-known creative figures.
Katie is also part of the history of the Bubble Room, the imaginative Captiva restaurant recognized for its vintage decorations, moving toy trains, handmade breads and towering layer cakes.
Katie Gardenia and the Bubble Room
In May 1979, chef Jamie Farquharson and his wife Katie opened the Bubble Room on Captiva Island. Jamie contributed his culinary experience and collections, while Katie brought her talents as an artist and baker, including original recipes and cakes.
The restaurant began in the Farquharson family’s cottage and expanded over time into the colorful three-story Captiva landmark visitors know today. Its unusual combination of food, art, collectibles and year-round holiday decorations helped make it one of the island’s most recognizable destinations.
Tropical Sunrise's Connection
Tropical Sunrise was originally built by artist Katie Gardenia, whose creativity is part of the home’s story. The property was remodeled in 1998 and now combines modern comforts with the warm, individual character that makes it different from a conventional vacation rental.
Today, Tropical Sunrise continues to share a connection to Captiva’s creative past while providing families and groups with a comfortable place to enjoy the island.

Tropical Sunrise accommodates up to eight guests across four bedrooms. The home features a private heated pool, several outdoor decks, spacious indoor gathering areas, a well-equipped kitchen, and a game and entertainment area.
